Vehicle Description

The Alfa Romeo 4C is built around a lightweight carbon fiber tub draped in a SMC sheet-molded compounds body with aluminum suspension subframes. Power comes from a transverse mid-mounted turbocharged 1.7-liter DOHC inline-four-cylinder engine rated at 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The engine is backed by a six-speed dual-clutch transmission that sends power to the rear wheels.

Because of its light weight, the 4C goes without power steering, offering a linear steering feel. Suspension duties are handled by double control arms and F1-style angled springs and dampers up front and a MacPherson strut suspension in back.

A blistering 4.3-second dash to 60 mph en route to a 12.8-second, 108.8-mph quarter-mile. That beats the manual Exige by 0.2 second and 0.9 mph thanks twin-clutch! and trails our best twin-clutch Cayman S by exactly the same margin. Braking from 60 mph looks less impressive at 113 feet versus Exiges 105 and Cayman S 101, but the different test surface could account for some of that. I certainly cant find any fault with the feel or fade-resistance of the four-wheel vented-and-perforated Brembo discs.

This is a no-compromises high-performing sports car; manual shifting would slow the car a bunch. Also, packaging a shifter and the complicated linkage required to reach the transverse-mounted transaxle would have resulted in an unsatisfying shifter feel.
